Pre-Emergent Herbicides
Do you want to keep those pesky weeds out of your property’s turf? Take action now before they invade and apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides! Pre-Emergents offer a great way to control grassy and broad leaf weeds in both cool and warm season grasses. The purpose of this turf application is to create a weed-killing barrier and prevent weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass from germinating. Not only do these summer annual weeds compete for nutrients and choke out healthy turf but they are also a dreadful eyesore. Pre-Emergents are an incredibly effective way of killing weeds before they take root and ruin the beautiful aesthetic of your property’s turf.
A few key things to remember:
- TIMING is everything! Application timing is critical with Pre-Emergent Herbicides in order for them to be effective and obtain desired results. The products must be applied to the turf and a herbicide barrier established before the weed seed begins to germinate. Pre-Emergents are ineffective if applied to the turf after weeds have already begun to grow. The soil temperature sweet spot for weed germination is about 52 degrees, so for Tennessee and Northern GA, mid-February to mid-March is the perfect time to apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides. So, make sure they are applied now!
- Irrigate to Activate It is critical that Pre-Emergent Herbicides are watered into the soil after application. Either rainfall or irrigation will do but water must reach the herbicide in order to activate and firmly establish the weed-killing barrier.
- Please Don’t Disturb Another thing to keep in mind is that the soil must remain undisturbed in order to maintain the Pre-Emergent barrier. Try to keep children, residents’ dogs or other critters from digging or scratching and breaking that barrier.
- Wait on the Grass Seed Whatever you do, don’t plant grass seed within 90 of applying Pre-Emergent Herbicides. Any new germinating seed, including turf grass, will not survive trying to grow through the barrier.
